Stone Circles on the South Dorset Ridgeway
The South Dorset Ridgeway is a megalith enthusiasts dream. Barrows, tumuli, stones circles and the most beautiful views as you walk along the ridge.
The ridge starts at Osmington and ends at West Bexington and is 17 miles in length.
I have recently been visiting the stones and I have to say, it gets to be addictive!
I would like to introduce you to two circles – The Hampton Circle and Kingston Russel Circle. Both incredibly different but equally magical.
The Hampton Circle
The best way to locate this circle is to park at the top of Portesham hill and follow the route on the left hand side of the road by the barn signposted West Bexington. The path leads you straight to the circle. It was not easy to find however as it was incredibly overgrown but there was a sign in the undergrowth that had been recently cleared.
After treading down the brambles the stones were much clearer to see in all their glory! (even on the foggy day that Janis and I visited)

The sign in front of the circle

This wonderful old hawthorn was 100 metres from the circle
Kingston Russel Stone Circle
This beautiful circle is located from the road to Gorwell on the Macmillan Trail.
If the crops are high in the field it is difficult to see. There was an old concrete sign but it was laying in the undergrowth. It is difficult to get a photograph that does the circle justice as the stones are fallen
