What is Tai Chi Chuan?
Tai Chi is an ancient chinese martial art, the beginnings of which go back many thousands of years. This ancient martial art is mainly practiced today for its health benefits, of which there are many. Tai Chi is practiced in a slow controlled manner reducing the possibilty of suffering strain or muscle injuries while strengthening muscles and increasing flexibility and suppleness.
Tai Chi is a form of exercise suitable for people of any age, in fact in China children learn the art from an early age and continue to practice throughout their lives.
Tai Chi has one very big advantage over other exercise systems , once mastered it can be practiced any where without equipment and takes only ten minutes to complete the entire form.
The Form
Tai Chi is practiced by a series of stances linked together by flowing movement this is called the Form. It has often been likened to dance or slow calisthenics, this however is not correct, Tai Chi is so much more than that. it is a complete philosophy blending physical exercise, mental exercise and energy work or spiritual exercise if you prefer, to greatly improve the human condition. Spritual in this instance does not mean religious.
Tai Chi can and is practiced by millions of people throughout the world of many different faiths. This most profound of martial arts promotes mental relaxation making it an excellent aid in the fight against stress and its related problems, such as poor sleep patterns and high blood pressure. One of the westerns world biggest enemies. By focusing the mind on the slow flowing movements of the form a meditative state is achieved freezing the mind and promoting a peaceful mental state. For this reason Tai Chi is often likened to yoga and spoken of as meditation in movement.
